Fall Term in Fifth Grade Garden Science

The fifth grade class have been learning about plant anatomy and physiology in order to develop skills for transplanting, weeding, and winterizing the garden. Here are some of the ideas we’ve been working on:

Students have also been developing their own plant growth experiments and learning about experimental design in the process. Here’s what those projects look like so far:

Next on the agenda is our plant identification unit. We will be learning to identify plants to the family level for the following families: Mint, Carrot, Onion, Mustard, Sunflower, Pea, all of which are commonly found in our garden both as food plants and as weeds.

Spring Photo Tour

Now that spring has officially arrived, here’s a quick look at what’s going on in the garden!  Fifth grade has been out transplanting and is starting to plan their spring/summer garden.

Here’s a quick snapshot of what’s going on out there as of this morning.  The non-stop bulb show may be just around the corner.

Here are a few photos of the rain garden all planted, and fifth graders working on setting up the drip irrigation for the raised beds.  Almost all the watering is on a timer now: a huge relief since it’s been HOT and with no rain in the forecast.
